UCF health alert after case of bacterial meningitis
The University of Central Florida has issued a health alert as a
precaution after a student was diagnosed with bacterial meningitis.
UCF says county health officials believe the latest case confirmed by
a test Jan. 30 is unrelated to a case last week. In that case, the
student was diagnosed with the bacteria that can cause the illness.
The announcement on the UCF Web site says UCF is working closely with
Orange County Department of Health officials, who have contacted 12
students identified as having close contact with the student diagnosed
with bacterial meningitis. Close contact is defined as persons who
shared a household with the student or had direct contact with oral
secretions (kissing, sharing a drink, sharing food from the same
plate, sharing a cigarette or being coughed on from very close
proximity.)
UCF Health Services staff is dispensing antibiotics to those
considered to be at risk.
The Centers for Disease Control site says Streptococcus pneumoniae and
Neisseria meningitidis are the leading causes of bacterial meningitis.
